REAL PATIENTS: Lifestyle

It’s difficult when you’re really busy and you’re moving around quickly, it’s so much easier to get fast food than it is to get planned meals.

I really ate poorly.

My problem is I’ve never met a calorie I didn’t like.

My cooking has very high carbohydrates and fat.

With the salt that I liked, and the sausages, and bacon, and all of the bad stuff, that just compounded the situation.

I enjoy food. It’s one of my obvious weaknesses.

We went to nutrition classes, and we went to dietary classes.

My dietician, she came up with a food plan for me, and my wife made sure I stuck with it.

They said that I needed to stop eating a lot of fatty foods.

I went on a very low sodium diet, my wife purchased a cookbook with 500 low sodium recipes.

We do eat better as far as more vegetables, more fruit.

Fewer carbs of course, because it’s energy that I used to burn off that I would now store.

The less sugars, I needed to work more on, I guess like the wheat, the whole wheat’s, and proper foods like that.

You can cheat once and a while, but the key to success is as soon as you finish that one cheat you go back on diet. That’s where most people have a problem.

People indulge and that’s the bad thing. I don’t care how good the food is, you’re supposed to eat in moderation.

I would think 90% of the people have the food adjustment major problem, but the second one is if you’ve never been active it’s hard to get active.

Exercise as much as you can, because what I’ve found out is exercise does help with your high blood pressure.

So I decided I better exercise, and ever since then I’ve been exercising. I did a lot of jogging and playing golf and racquetball.

If you don’t go to the gym, ride a bicycle, play sports, play with the kids.

My husband and I have been trying to go to the gym at least 3 times a week.

Ride a treadmill, the bicycle, you know, and even my son — when I go with him — has me doing some of the weights.

Your lifestyle and your diet have a tremendous impact.

If you’re smoking, stop smoking.

I never drink. I have never drank. I don’t smoke.

I needed to quit right on the spot, I went home, put the cigarettes down, nobody believed me.

If you control yourself, you feel better. I do.
